Review by LB Sedlacek
In his latest book of poetry, Robert L. Martin has written a soaring collection of poems that invites readers into a renewed journey of reflection. He employs vivid verses to explore various themes within the pages.
His life experiences are unrestrained in this spirited and imaginative work. His words, though, remain grounded offering a balance of emotions and exploration, hope and struggles as well as introspection and upliftment.
Martin’s poems offer the solidity of the human experience with a dash of insight into the inner spirit. He uses clear language that is encouraging to readers, but also evocative in that it invites the reader to dive into introspection to experience all the layers within each poem.
His style is intricate, but accessible. The cadence in his poems offer a natural rhythm that will resonate with most anyone. Each poem is like its own narrative capturing moving moments along the way offering a multitude of choices and potential possibilities as to the outcome.
Throughout the book, Martin draws from a variety of subjects that flutter delightfully through his verses. “Words and Wings” is not only a personal collection, but one that gives a voice to a silence between the lines.
From the poem “Rhythm Frenzy”
Power into power into power into power,
power with black and silver teeth,
set into motion with drums of fire and ice
with satanic fangs and thunder cannons
firing cannon balls with penetrating teeth
to slice through the flesh and into the heart
and bypass the mind and run through the veins
and take over the inner domain of the heart
as the frenzied dancers dance,
One of the poet’s strength in these poems is the evident musicality to them. There is a rhythm to his work that enhances its overall impact.
Overall, this is a gentle yet powerful volume—ideal for readers who appreciate poetry that is honest, reflective, and spiritually resonant. Robert L. Martin once again proves himself a poet of both heart and of a bright horizon.
Each line is thoughtfully calibrated. Each poem carries with it a sense of renewal or perhaps transformation.
From the poem “Beacons in the Twilight”
Beautiful beacons in the twilight of the day,
shining down in rhythm to the ocean’s sway,
Martin has written a heartfelt poetry collection showing his gift for words. He offers readers honest compositions that weave in melodic phrasing and graceful images. There is power in being able to soul search and present one’s voice through poems in such a manner.
The poet has crafted a book that would be a thoughtful escape, a harmonious blend of hope and reflection and a reason to reflect. Martin is able to anchor the reader to his poems making this an enjoyable and rememberable work overall.
